I have confirmed with AMD that their next driver update will resolve this issue. In the mean time Dx mode, or the affinity trick is the way to go :)

Thanks for the input and help everyone.

Yeah, when I read that 12.2 was messing with SPAZ I just didn't install it to begin with. :)

The 12.3 drivers are out, but no word if it fixes the issues from what I've read in the changelog?

Did some experimenting with shortcuts, I think I did it all as it should be, and it should work, but - as you've probably realized by now by seeing this many "shoulds" - it doesn't. For other people to experiment:

make a shortcut to
spazGame.exe
in your
steam\steamapps\common\space pirates and zombies
directory

put the following in target:
C:\Windows\System32\cmd.exe /C start /AFFINITY 3 SpazGame.exe
and leave the start in unchanged (it must point to correct dir).

this *SHOULD* make the game start on core 1 and 2 (3 it a bitmask for cores - 7 would be cores 1,2,3 and so on. If you don't get it leave the "3" as it is).

This does not seem to work on my windows 7 prof 64bit for SPAZ. Setting the affinity manually through task manager fixes the problem, though.

Nope. I installed it last night and it is still choppy. I'm cool with the checkbox work around for now. I have to say this game is extremely addicting. I can't wait for mod support to see what the community can do! :)

What caught my eye is this line in console.log:

Quote:
Primary Display Device Found:
Vendor Id: VEN_0000
Device Id: DEV_0000

Normally it should be VEN_1002 for ATI. So somehow Torque does not recognize ATI as Vendor of my card.
I solved the issue with my own Torque2D Game by adding this to defaultPrefs.cs:
Code:
switch$( $PCI_VEN )
{
   case "VEN_0000":
       $pref::Video::displayDevice = "D3D";
       $pref::Video::allowOpenGL = 0;
   // [....]
}

This way I don't have to set the affinity / dx mode every time.
Can't replace it in SPAZ with my own one though since you guys seem to have a lot more code after the switch than in the factory delivered defaultPrefs.cs.
I am not very savy with Torque (yet :D, I am learning it) but maybe it helps. If the issue persists you could maybe add it so we don't have to fiddle with the taskmanager every time :D.

Thanks for the heads up. It would require a little more rejiggering than the defaultprefs now as you have seen. But this is an interesting starting point. I believe VEN_0000 is the default case which actually may come up a lot so a global change is a bit sketchy too.

Also, for your game, you may want to change this: (from our script)

// Default to OpenGL
$pref::Video::displayDevice = "OpenGL";
$pref::Video::preferOpenGL = 1;

//was D3D default
//$pref::Video::displayDevice = "D3D";
//$pref::Video::preferOpenGL = 0;

// But allow others
$pref::Video::allowOpenGL = 1;
$pref::Video::allowD3D = 1;

So I think that I have a solution for the issue. I am going to attach a new executable for the non Steam version. If you have the driver issue, I would be curious if this file resolves it.

If you are playing the Steam version and previously posted on this thread, I can send you a stand alone key so you can test this out.

If this does work, I would like to release the patch soon, but I am wary as it is a rendering change and it would be great if a few of you could give this a try.

Another side effect of this change may be improved frame rate.

Aren't you meant to be on Holiday? :)
Anyway, I would gladly help with the steam version.

Sorry for the bump, but with the latest ati drivers, the issue is completly gone.
And my newly purchased Torque2D license now actually works without any workarounds :D.

Oh interesting. Did ATI put out some new drivers recently? They told me that they would be including a fix in the next patch.
