Hi All,

It has been a while since I did a blog entry so here is a big one.

Phew, since release on May 9th, it has been the busiest time of our lives. We have managed to stay number 1 on Impulse's weekly top seller list since the 9th so we are really shocked/proud/happy :)

For those that are curious, we have sold 8595 units as of this post. That has put a decent dent in the development costs and gets us about 1/3 of the way to being profitable. At the very least it means that we will not lose out homes, this year anyhow :)

In the past few weeks we have spent a lot of time getting our distribution options in order, and working on compatibility patches. This meant a lot of time solving problems instead of making progress on gameplay. We are VERY pleased to announce that we are now ready to get back to work improving on SPAZ full time, instead of building/fixing infrastructure.

The key result of our work is that SPAZ is now available for purchase from us! If you had been waiting to grab your copy because you wanted to ensure the devs got the largest cut, have a less than legal copy, or if you had your doubts about Impulse in the past (although they are a great company actually) then we have the solution. Click the link below to purchase through our new page on BMT Micro. We have not branded the page with our art yet, but it does the job.

https://secure.bmtmicro.com/servlets/Orders.ShoppingCart?CID=6775&PRODUCTID=67750000

We also want to give a special shout out to ScarletMadness and Colin. Those two went above and beyond providing expertise/code for our new key activation system.

We have also uploaded the new build (Version 0.9.007) to GamersGate this morning, and once we give the green light we will be live there as well.

We are also in contact with Direct2Drive and Desura and are waiting for contracts from both to begin distribution there as well. So in the near future, hopefully you will see SPAZ logos everywhere :) Luckily, most of the distribution work now can be done on auto pilot from us and we can get back to building content. Please keep telling your friends and posting about us. Word of mouth has been huge.

As you can see, we have been quite busy. On the marketing front we had gone quiet for the last couple weeks, but now that the distribution net is widening we plan on doing another big push. We are also going to start gameplay polls so you all can vote on the features you want to see next as well as setting up some townhall meeting nights on the IRC (well sometimes days so our European brethren get a chance to talk too)

And yet there is more. We do have a new version out after all. Since we were so tied up with what was mentioned above the patch notes do not contain any major features, but the next patch certainly will.

0.9.007 Patch Notes:

• Last mothership hull has a correct name
• Various spelling fixes
• Distance indicator on target HUD
• Combat mouse color overlay does not give away enemy cloaked ships
• Trojan Horse mission tuning (pickup ship set to passive, UTA is forced to hate during the mission)
• Mission health bars now understand ship shields
• Tactics panel buttons that have hotkeys will now show them on mouse over
• No more invincible ship exploit
• Better objective tracking on chapter 4 infection missions (shows remaining count, health, etc)
• UTA Distress mission will now fail if you aggravate the UTA or allow both stations to be destroyed.
• Drone component mouse over now shows connection to other weapon research categories
• Mission space props have a tiny bit of dampening to prevent them from flying off into oblivion
• Front end buttons don’t get confused when there are no save games present
• Subsystem stats on the research screen are not so confusing compared to beam research.
• Scavenger hunt mission objective more clear
• Saving a game drops the player out of the save menu to prevent accidental save clobbering
• Artifact discovery tuning (Artifact x2 health, more time between enemy waves)
• Shield and cloak recharge ratio shown on the HUD now
• Research screen categories now have descriptions
• Level up and warp gate cleared callouts now stack correctly
• Removed some lip smack and ticks in cut scene dialog
• Ally and friend icons on relations tutorial is now correct
• New front end buttons take up less space (in prep for upcoming feature list)
• Can no longer get front end and tactics panel to co-exist
• “Follow me” flavored escort mission Ai is more obedient and won’t be so distracted by enemies and pickups.
• No more cloaked escort targets.

Thank you all so much for your support. We plan to continue to put our all into SPAZ, and we look forward to hearing your ideas on the forums.

Well, the patch is live on impulse. I had hoped for a more gameplay/balance oriented patch, so can't wait for the next patch. I would like if you did as the guys by star ruler where they release the patch notes for the next/upcoming patch and update it as things gets added.

We had anticipated doing more with this patch. Since we had to make a new build for the BMT Micro distribution, it seemed only fair patch the Impulse build with what we had fixed so far. One of the things we planned on putting in for this patch was an in-game upcoming feature list, which would do as you are suggesting. That will go in next time for sure.

I hate to be a nuisance, but... Cloak Booster still requires Shield Tech instead of Cloak Tech, at least in existing saved games. >.<

Awesome news. I already have bought mine from impulse before checking if there was no other solution where the money went directly to you but hey.

Just out of curiosity, how much does impulse takes of each sale ?

All the online distributors seem to be the same 30% flat rate so far. BMT Micro (used by our personal sales link launched today) takes 9% which is a lot nicer, but we don't get any marketing support.

Is there any way to migrate off of impulse at present short of re-purchasing? Note that this isn't impulse specific hate, it's DRM hate. I'd like to play without a client involved.

You realise you don't need to use Impulse except to patch right?

in fact As long as you have your license key to hand you don't need Impulse installed at all as far as transferring it to other computer is concerned

It's that needing it to patch part that annoys me.

Ahh that part we don't have a sexy solution for yet. We will be looking into some in game notification of patches being available in the near future though.

each to his own, but it's not like it doesn't make life easier, i'm more annoyed by games which make me download individual patches in a certain order from their inevitably rubbish server.

Impulse does issue serials with the purchases... so it might be possible to set up something that "converts" an Impulse SPAZ key for use on other platforms/distribution methods, similar to the way Steam accepts certain non-Steam game CD Keys and allows you to register your games with them even if the key and game aren't normally used with Steam.

Looking forward to the next patch, anyway. This one might be small in terms of overall scope, but I think it's made some extremely useful changes for new and old players alike.

There would be much love if impulse keys where transferable to Steam!

I have most of my stuff there.... And had been migrating away from impulse for the longest time.... until SPAZ...

I hate steam myself, its so annoying buying a boxed pc game then having to install and update steam just to play my boxed copy of the game, can't I just enter the cd key and have the cd in the dvd-tray like it used to be? insted of needing to install all this extra crap just to play the game I bought?

Buying directly from us doesn't require any sign-up or clients installed. Maybe some day we'll have a disk ;) but for now that is cleanest way to get the game.

Nice, I know its to prevent piracy, but when a pirated version of the game is less hassle to use than a legit purchaised version people tend to get annoyed. I remember the bioshock fiasco with their activation server always screwing up, meanwhile the pirates were playing the game with no problems compared.

Thank you for giving us the option to buy directly from you!

I've been waiting for this to be released on steam but was also wondering about showing support as early as I could.
I haven't even touched the game yet, still waiting for the email with the order confirmation,
but your awesome interaction with the community is already a good enough reason for me to do whatever I can to ensure your game becomes a success!!

The last point of the improvement list states that escorts won't be cloaked anymore.
But exactly this happened to me when I played earlier. It was a mission through a minefield, iirc. The ship was cloaked and as I was neutral to the faction I couldnt even see the ship, which of course lead to me shooting it on accident and thus angering the employer. I think it was a Sensor ship.
Is this an oversight or did I misinterpret the changelog?

Arrrg!! I told the thing not to cloak, but there might be 2 bugs at work here. Do you happen to remember the exact name of the mission?

I've already gone ahead and bought the game through BMT Micro so the devs get a bigger cut of the profits, but for anyone waiting on GamersGate, it's now listed there:

I too adopted early, through Impulse, and wish I had not had to do so. If an option becomes available to transfer game access to Steam or a DD from your own page, I would be very appreciative. But, no rush - much prefer game-based updates to access-type updates. I just don't like launching multiple 3rd-party clients to run a single game.

Would there be a way I could get a copy of this version of SPAZ?

I've purchased a copy from Impulse but their client is utter shite to be quite honest.
And I've not been able to use it to play SPAZZ yet. :l
