So I've been playing this game for a few days now, and here's what I think so far:

It reminds me of a real-time version of Master of Orion II, which is a good thing, since that was probably my favorite game as a kid. The ship customization, technology research, specialists, etc. all lend to make the game an in-depth experience. I do wish the ships of the same class type were a bit more balanced in their abilities instead of having one or two obvious winners, but it is what it is.

While the game is fantastic overall, I have a couple things I don't quite understand. For example, I don't understand my motivation as to why I need to have any "Star Infrastructure" or "Star Security." There just doesn't seem to be any good reason to even worry about relations in any given star system I come across when I can just destroy the star bases and take the technology. I haven't seen any benefit or detriment to maxing star security/infrastructure or destroying it.

I haven't really seen any action from the Bounty Hunters. I can be in a system wrecking everyone's stuff, and the BHs haven't really given me a reason to quiver in my pants. Part of me wishes they were more aggressive or had a greater role in the game. There's no real need to do many missions in any one star system, so if whatever the bounty cap happens to be is getting close, there are countless other stars to visit.

Once the zombies appear, which they just did for me, medium hulls and below seem absolutely, positively useless, are destroyed and/or infected within a matter of seconds, and just eat up your rez while doing nothing useful. I suddenly feel vastly underpowered only having three ships on screen, with only the largest being vaguely good. If the large one gets infected, and it doesn't give me the option to vent decks for some reason, it's pretty much lights out for my rez count. Small ships are pretty good for destroying missiles and drones, but not very useful in the hands of the AI. However, you have to pilot your large ship to make sure it's being put to use, and I haven't figured out which AI option stays out of enemy range while shooting down missiles for the team.

Edit: Take back what I said about bounty hunters; I just racked up enough bounty from a single UTA blockade to have the BHs not let me leave the system. I opted to fight and it cost me at least a couple thousand rez to beat them. I'm guessing there are certain ship designs I can only unlock from BHs, though I'm not sure I want to go through that again to get them :-/.

The "Vent Decks" option is only availiable when you have a Captain on the ship (at least 1 crew member, as it says somewhere).
