Great, how am I meant to take care of the bot threat then? It's like capital punishment restrictions all over again. ;)

Well. Since you can IP ban. you are a step ahead of them. Just look what IP's the spam is coming from.

Yeah. Looks like there area few doubles though.
Try to find ranges in the sort of ###.###.###.XXX where only the XXX differs. Then see if you can safely ban those ranges without kicking actual users. So check the IP's of actual users too, before you range kick people.

Dude, I can just go and find out who the kitchen bots are and remove those. If they have a website, I click the profile. If the sig fits, then I delete them. Simple.

Yo Richard, can I get a "Clean up database by deleting bot profiles" tool up in here?

I can see the bots list in the ACP, but I'm a bit reluctant to give anyone access to the ACP as it is a nuclear weapon. Let me know if there is a plugin (preferably not a pain to install) OR, the name of the frigging kitchen bot so I can destroy it.

It takes me 5 seconds to bust out the ban hammer, and with the minimum post link limit, I've seen very few bot posts in the past couple weeks. I do still check every post on the forums every day. As much as I appreciate the help destroying filthy bots, I do want to be aware of how often they appear, in case I need to up the security in some way.

In short, let me know if there is a "tool" you had in mind. Thanks again EvilNinja :)

Very few bot posts? I took care of one about 12 hours ago, and "busting out the banhammer" for me takes only around 10 seconds.
In fact, I think I should be calling it the Portable Airlock, just to go with the theme, you know?

If by ACP you mean the admin control panel, and if you're not okay with me having access to it, I can understand that. I'd also be hesitant to put my forum into the hands of someone I don't know, to a greater or lesser extent. If there is no "permissions" setting that would allow a mod like me to delete a permabanned user (who is, of course, a bot as well) then I'll just have to stick to banning them.

yes delete user is admin power not mod power.
With mod power you can ban users and flag as spammers. You can also set the account into moderate mode(meaning they think they are posting but are not. unless you read the post and ok it).

With mod powers - depending on the level of mod given, you can get what I call sub admin level. With that you can the modify IP ban list, modify the word ban list, modify forum thread settings in such a way that accounts with less then one post can't post in them. Fun stuff like that. You could also change the sign up process a bit by adding better security questions. Things like "Blue and Yellow makes what color?"(Before you think about it, the answer green you dummies)

I checked the last bot, it managed to sign up, post its stuff, log out and disappear in all of 3 minutes.

We either prevent them, or we clean up after them, but we can't stop them as is.

read the updated post.

At Autopatcher.com <-- the site I co-run. (shameless plug... Could be) We had spam like frigging crazy. We switched to stopforumspam.com and added more interesting sign up questions. Spam has literally dropped down to once a month.

Richard manages the server-side stuff here, I don't do any of that other stuff you mentioned.

btw. that Yellow and Blue thing only works with subtractive colors. Ya gotta be SPECIFIC.

This is the top of the list of users, sorted by join date. Everyone with a website is a bot. If you want to see who got a free ride, just count from koteddall upwards.
I expect more will come soon.

Now now, don't be silly. You're in no danger right now. Unless you've been a bot all along! But that's not very likely... is it?

With these activity levels, banning bots is gonna be the most exciting thing I get to do.

or... you could learn how to use the next engine and offer nearly free programming time(while expecting a free version of the game as payment)?

I've played some Unity games, and am now witnessing the creation of another. However, it's still confusing.

Besides, I'd have to buy stuff first before I could help program, would pay regardless.

ya.. considering they had to pay 3k to get a license for 2 ppl I would imagine it would cost 1.5 to get one for you too.

So. EvilNinja. How can a non-mod perhaps see if a kitchen bot with 0 posts is already banned or not?
Cause they don't look much different from normal usergroups.

Hey. Maybe you could give Richard a list of all confirmed bots and let him nuke them out of existence.
(Fully deleting those profiles)

Yeah. Maybe it's time for some spring cleaning around here.

How can you see if a kitchen bot is banned or not? Good question. The answer: I can't see it either. I just have to remember which ones I've banned.

I hope I won't have to do that for long. As to your last point, all those with kitchen websites are obvious bots, and the website can be seen from the Member list, in the right-hand column. Why make a list if we've already got one?

So Richard doesn't have to search/lookup those names that need to be nullified.

Remember that DestinyAtlantis got deleted And IP banned, cause the admins made a late night error in judgment.

If there's a mod area for staff members, you can put it in a post (there).
Otherwise a PM should do.

PS. Check it twice. ;)
