DISCUSS!

Though seriously, I want to know what other people think about this type of genre. Is it your favourite? Do you have a favourite in this genre? Whats your opinion on it as whole?

But most importantly, I want to know what brought Spaz to your attention? Im not looking for "I saw it on Cynical Brit", more over something like this: " The ship customization and faction system."

Go go go!

its my favourite, but because the low number of good games in the past years, I stopped playing them for a while.

the thing you are not looking for: notch has tweeted it :)
the thing you are looking for: zombies!, great customization, dynamic world.

i think my favorite space game of all time is freelancer hands down (wtb new version microsoft...), after that homeworld (but thats more of an RTS then a space game)

and i like this game because of the special features (outfitting ships, strong AI, non-linear progression) plus the quality is amazing, especially the art is what gives it that touch of awesome

hmm, Well, of this type it would be:
Freelancer
homeworld
Space Rangers 2 Reboot
AI War Fleet Command: Light of the Spire
And now, Ta da, Spaz \o/

Also, Antario, there is a huge update/mod for freelancer out there, just google ;)

Well I wonder why noone mentioned it.

For me its the unchallanged king of SpaceFPS: Freespace 2
And spaceRTS its the Homeworld series.

Ah, yes. Freespace 2. That was a very good one. About the only thing I liked in that genre after they quit making Wing Commander games.
Freespace 2 was very good, but I rank Wing Commander feel over it. Def. worth a mention.

I fear Homeworld for all it's short comings will be in most peoples list that like spaz, hehe.

In Freespace the big Ships were really BIG. When one of those carriers jumped into the battle it was really impressive. In most other games you if measure size of a fightership against the size of a destroyer and its not really a mentionable difference.

That was the biggest appeal of Freespace. Being in between two HUGE battleships and getting knocked around like a pinball if their laser blast exchange caught your shields gave it a very epic feel.

Wing Commander got the scale a lot better in the 4th release on.

To SPAZ or not to SPAZ?:
1) Finally a top-down space shooter that isn't a music-based fireworks show.
2) Ship creation and customization.
3) Large and long campaign.
4) The graphics weren't airlifted in from the 90s.

That is what made me have more then just a short look into SPAZ.

The Escape velocity series was pretty awesome. The mod community was crazy at one time. There was a babylon 5 mod that I still miss sometimes.
Homeworld 2
EVE online
X-3 but it was a bit slow paced for me. That and the ship explosions and weapon effects were pretty meh.
Sins of a solar empire
AI Fleet command. Again my gripe with this game is the weapon effects are pretty terribad and theres no inertia on the ships. I lost interest quite fast.

Space/SciFi games in general are definetly one of my favourite genres. Allthough, I think that good game is a good game no matter the genre or the platform.

Some of the classics I've played or still play:
TIE Fighter CD (Oh, the memories. the original Gravis analog joystick made this game soooo good.)
Distant Worlds: Return of the Shakturi (currently my most played 4X game ever)
Star Control 2 (Ur-quan masters)
Descent 2 (Yes, it isn't technically a space game but it was one of the first games I bought myself so I have good memories of it. Also, it and Deus Ex started my love for SciFi/space games)
Freespace 2
Freelancer
MoO2
Space Rangers 2 Reboot
Sins of a Solar Empire
Starscape
GalCiv 2
Homeworld 1&2
Sword of the Stars
Craploads of SHMUPs from 90's and 00's that I won't list here.

Never got into EVE even though I would have loved to try it out. Reasons being real-life (Only so much time to play. EVE would probably destroy my already balanced gaming times) and dated comp.

EDIT: I noticed SPAZ trailer at the Gametrailers website and loved it. Too bad it got buried beneath all the big-budget crap quite fast. Pity really.

There's probably lot others but these will do for now.

Moo2 was one of my personal faves, then Moo3 came out and I died a little inside. The Galactic Civilizations series did a good job of picking up where they left off though.

Speaking of 4x games, did anyone ever play Ascendancy? It was my first 4x game and probably my favorite till Gal Civ. I did enjoy the Star Trek one, Birth of the Federation.

You aren't the only one Antario. The X series seems to need certain mindset to be enjoyable. It gets tiresome and frustrating really easily, for me at least. Tried to get into X3, but it was extremely hard to enjoy it as a game. In the end, I went back playing SR2 and modded Freelancer.
I would choose Freelancer or SR2: Reboot (or SPAZ for that matter  ) over X series any day. And no offence to those who enjoy X series. I salute your ability to enjoy it, but it's just not my cup of tea.

Showing my age here, but by far the best space game I ever played from Frontier First Encounters (Elite III) and before that Elite 2, and earlier still Exile on the BBC Micro and C64.

I think x-3 would be my best game if the devs would increasing the game's pacing by about 100x.

To be fair, I never played a Space game before that I liked... But sometime you have to be the first... Gj S.P.A.Z =.= You made me like a genre of gamestyle where none before have succeded.

well, I just started playing x3 TC.
and yea, the pace is very slow, but I think that if you understant it completely, it can really be fun.
I am now trying to get my gamepad working with it. still no succes :(

Does x3 have "turret view" for large ships as in manual targeting of turrets in first/third person?
