I bought SPAZ because it looked like it was heavily influenced by Star Control 2. SC2 is probably my favorite game, ever. I haven't seen a game like it and I don't think there will ever be a game that comes close. I was a lucky boy and had the 3DO version which instead of text used full voices for all communications with aliens. It made the game come alive! It was a great semi-open game that didn't hold your hand through the story. It only gave you directions and subtle hints as to what to do, the rest was up to you to risk exploring. And exploring was never a waste of time. You'd find resources and suddenly meet new alien races. Up until that time I'd never played a game like that.

If you never played Star Control 2 but are interested, the original developers thankfully found an old floppy disk with the original source code and open sourced/released the game for free with all the content including the 3DO's voice communications. You can download it here: http://sc2.sourceforge.net/

If you've played it, what's your favorite memory of it? Mine is probably mercilessly defeating my brother with a Shofixti Scout ship every time we'd play.

Yep, definetly one of my all-time favourites too. I've played Ur -Quan Masters through three times and it's just excellent.

Favourite memories:
- Finding my first rainbow world and buying loads of stuff from Melnormes.
- Meeting Orz and learning about Androsynth.
- Owning Sa-Matra with a Pkunk Fury. Never gets old.
- Meeting Thraddash. Those guys are hilarious. Reeunk afterburners FTW!
- Generally just making progress and and finding stuff. This game doesn't really hold your hand and making progress always feels so satisfying.
- Beating Ur-Quan Dreadnought with Skiff or Eluder.

Nothing is impossible, not if you can imagine it!

I'll probably be able to get to the end-game a little quicker this time now that I know how to play, but suffice it to say that if you can get into its brand of action and strategy, SPAZ is easily worth the $15 that MinMax Games are charging.

Best moments of SC2:

-The first time I heard the Yehat theme.
-Helping the Syreen destroy the Mycon.
-Liberating the Chmmr.
-Reaching the Sa-Matra, fighting a fairly rough battle with the remaining guards, staring down the platform with what's left of your fleet... and then reinforcements show up.

Still one of the best games of all time.
