So I've been playing (yes. PLAYING) SPAZ for quite a while on my Laptop which Only has an Intel HD integrated Graphics chip.

It's biggest downside? It only supports up to Glide 2.1
Which baffles the 3.0 requirement for me, as I don't have the DX compatibility set in the initial splash settings screen.
Does SPAZ somewhere detect the low Glide and defaults to DX instead?

Anyway. So far, so good with running the game and playing it.

Until I guess the Bounty hunters update. (I guess)
What happens?

When I warp to a new location. (MotherShip jump in, mission location, base visits, etc.)
I have a dark screen (sometimes with location background) Hear the initial loading "woosh" of the ship(s) coming in. (music score, etc.).
Nothing happens. As since the game wasn't "Ready" loading yet.
Then the Same "woosh". (music etc.!) happens again, but now with the ship(s) coming in too.

OK. Not a huge issue, but mostly annoying.

Also. And this part I probably have to look in the low Glide for it.
During the Rather big/huge battles where there are tons of ships/explosions and what else more happening at the same time. The game slows down. Sometimes to a crawling pace.
That is. Till that big battle is as good as over.

Any help, insight and suggestions are appreciated.

PS.
Some Obligatory System specs:
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit
CPU: Intel® Core™ i3-380M
RAM: 8GB
Graphics: Intel® HD Graphics (128 ~ 1760 MB of shared memory available)
Anything else on request

Hmm. On the launcher screen, can you select DX compatibility mode and see if that works? Also can you please attach a console.log file especially when you are getting slowdown?

Haven't tried DX compatibility yet. Will do on a next run.
Actually. I just lowered the Effects and debris sliders From 3/4 to around 1/2 and this has helped already a lot.

Anyway. I'll add a console log of this (rather short) play with effects and debris sliders lowered.

OK. Did a run on DX Compatibility.
Gave around a mere 10% improvement during the high activity.
Also the hull strength text was of bad quality.
(As in I could barely read those values!)

I'd rather have the slowdowns. :)

Anyway. Off tweaking those debris and effects sliders.
They have a somewhat better effect.

Uhm. Yay, triple post?

Oh well. Just did another run in Glide mode with low Debris and effects values. (0.25) according to spz_settings.cs
(I'll attach this file too)
Anyway. Had been reading about the mining beam and that the huge one (on grinder, etc.) can crack asteroids.
So I fitted the main huge beam with a mining beam.
Utilized the fixed turret mod to fix a SECOND Huge mining beam in the turret space.
Then Went for the nearest mining station.
(good thing I was in an infection cleared mining system)

Set my biggest ship to the Freighter and piloted the grinder.

Noticed that by continuously cracking the asteroid the game speed was dropping considerably.
Which meant that the more Items there were in space, the more my game struggled to render the motions, existence and all that stuff.
Whenever my freighter picked up most of the rez floating and rocks being blown up, the speed of the game goes up again.

So. For this. Yet Another console log file for debugging pleasures. :D

Interesting. Thanks for the extra diagnosis. It does seem like your card is having a problem with large counts of objects (probably with alpha) I would bet the galaxy map is really slow for you too? Is it possible that you have an anti virus program running? Turning it off may help. SPAZ loads certain files a lot and anti virus programs can cause a real bottleneck sometimes. I would try disabling it entirely and running SPAZ again with your test case just to see.

Your CPU is about as powerful as mine, but I get no slowdown, so there is likely some external factor. Of course the integrated video card is also sucking off the cpu, which I do not have to deal with. I wonder if there is some way to set the affinity for spaz to a core other than what the integrated gfx is using?

Noticed something "odd" last night.
After tweaking around in both the launcher and the in-game settings panel, I had a "Normalish" gameplay.
As in. The above Grinder + Freighter combo without any noticeable slowing down.
Also managed to survive better during the missions cause it was running better.
(console log added yet again)
Here's the important part of the settings that were used that run.
"Settings code" | Click to toggle: +
Code:
$Settings_RenderObject =

new ScriptObject() {
   canSaveDynamicFields = "1";
      debrisMult = "0.25";
      displayDevice = "OpenGL";
      effectsMult = "0.25";
      fullscreen = "1";
      loseFocusPause = "1";
      lowMemMode = "0";
      mouseLocked = "1";
      panSpeed = "20";
      resolution = "1366 768 32";
      showAmbient = "0";
      showClouds = "0";
      showDamage = "1";
      showPlanets = "1";
      showStars = "0";
      showWeather = "0";
};

Yet. I'm NOT convinced I've solved the main issue.
This very well could have been a stroke of luck in my system performance.
Who knows? :)
Oh yeah. And yes the Galaxy map is slow too. And If I'm correct was still slowish on that last run

Well. My Antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials.
And it hasn't caused any "noticeable" issues before.

But anyway Instead of turning it fully off. (I have it for a reason, you know. :p )
I simply excluded the scanning of entire Steam folder in it's Advanced settings panel.
(haven't tested this yet, but should essentially do the same thing as turning it off)

Also will be checking if I could set affinity on the process.
To either all threads (2 Cores with Hyper threading to get 4 logical CPU'S/threads) if it's preset to one.
Or to the last two cpu's (they seem to be less used overall) if set to all.
Let's see if it's gonna improve things even better.

[edit]
Some good news. Some bad news.

Good news. Setting affinity to all cores (default is just the first) WILL result in an increased overall performance.

Bad News. Affinity has to be set EACH time SPAZ is launched. :| (need to figure out how to set this as permanent)
Also. It seems that having all cores set to be used is only good till the big battles, then it's like 2~3 seconds per frame.
Setting affinity to just the last core isn't advisable either as that will have the mouse locking off during loading, not to mention that I can see my desktop between load "switches"! :shock: (half second blinks)
[/edit]

Ok. I THINK I managed to set it's affinity to all cores permanently by the use a Program named "CPU-Control". Plus I think some "digital Voodoo magic" ( :P )

Now hope it sticks that way.

[edit] Nope. Not sticking to it. :( Only seems to "work" When having "CPU-Control" active in the right state.

Turns out ProLasso and a "hammer on the settings" did the affinity setting part.

Hmm ok, so from what I understand the affinity trick helped, but not enough to make the big battles work for you smoothly. Is there some way to isolate that virtual gpu to a core separate from SPAZ? I am fairly sure that is the issue. The virtual CPU is eating the cycles the cpu needs, leaving you with instead of a 2.5 ghz processor, maybe 2ghz of speed, which will not be enough for the larger battles.
